Odyssey Explore Client Journey: Matt
The Onset
Matt was a hard worker and proud of his career. When his employer sold the business to a large organization with higher expectations, he began feeling overwhelmed. Soon after, a loved one became ill and required his support. The combined stress became unmanageable.
Matt developed sleep difficulties, headaches, irritability and racing thoughts. His doctor prescribed medication and recommended time off work. After six months, despite feeling less irritable, Matt felt stuck and defeated. He shared these concerns with his insurer, who referred him to the Odyssey Explore program.
Treatment
In treatment with his Odyssey Health psychotherapist, Matt explored what a meaningful and fulfilling life would look like for him, with particular attention to family, career, and physical health. Together they assessed his challenges and created a plan to get back to what matters.
Matt learned evidence‑based strategies to move toward his personal, values-based goals, including mindfulness, behavioural skills, sleep hygiene, and effective pacing. With input from a kinesiologist, he developed a physical activity plan that his psychotherapist supported through collaborative planning and accountability.
Progress
Over time, Matt resumed regular exercise, re‑engaged with family and social activities, and felt more connected to the aspects of life that mattered most to him. Through psychotherapy, he developed greater insight into how stress had affected his functioning, and built practical skills to manage pressure more effectively at work and at home.
As his confidence and skills improved, Matt and his psychotherapist focused on preparing for a return to his own job. They identified potential workplace stressors and practiced strategies for pacing, communication, boundary‑setting, and maintaining psychological flexibility under increased demands. Together, they reviewed job requirements and ensured Matt’s physical, cognitive, and emotional functioning aligned with a sustainable return.
With the support of a structured maintenance plan and continued use of his new skills, Matt successfully returned to his job. He felt better equipped to manage expectations, balance responsibilities, and respond to stress in ways that aligned with his values. Returning to work restored Matt’s sense of competence and pride, while supporting long‑term occupational functioning.
